After thirteen years with both national and international audit firms, Essop started his own practice in 1986, which enables him to work closely with Vancouver-based businesses, and as well, mentor and develop young leaders for the business community. Essop is often heard saying "service the heck out of our clients" and "never sacrifice on quality". It's difficult to know where to begin in describing Essop's extensive experience as a professional; in his 39 years he has done almost everything a chartered accountant in public practice could be asked to do in providing assurance, accounting, tax and consulting services in Canada, the United States and internationally.

In the community, Essop has been a director of the Canada India Village Aid Association, an organization which works in the integrated development of rural communities in India, since 1988. He is currently the Treasurer and Project Management Director. Additionally, he has served as a director of VanCity Community Foundation, which works in the development of communities in Greater Vancouver and Victoria, as a director and Chair of the Credit Committee of VanCity Capital Corp., a subordinated debt fund which has the goal of building the local economies of Greater Vancouver and Victoria, and as a director and member of the Audit Committees of VanCity Credit Union and Citizens Bank.

Extended family in many parts of the world is a key part of Essop's life as are the hours, days and years he spends staying fit hiking, jogging and playing squash.
